The Nationals' starting pitcher Zach Day pitched 5 2/3 innings and gave up three earned runs. The Phillies starting pitcher Brett Myers pitched 6 2/3 innings and gave up two runs, only one run was earned. Neither of the two starters received a decision. FYI: The Nationals 7-3 victory over the Phillies was the first win by a Washington based National League team since October 14, 1899. That is when the Washington Senators beat the New York Giants by the score of 12-9. The Senators ended the season in 10th place in National League with a record of 54-98.

FYI: Brad Wilkerson became only the sixth Washington major league player to hit for a cycle since 1901. The Nats, Cristian Guzman became the seventh player when he hit for the cycle on August 28, 2008. Here is the list of Washington players that hit for the cycle.

August 28, 1924

Goose Goslin became the first player to hit for the cycle at Yankee Stadium and only the second player in Washington baseball history to accomplish the rare feat. The Washington Senators needed everything Goslin produced that day to beat the New York Yankees 11-6. Babe Ruth's two home runs wasn't enough as the Senators victory put Washington a half game up over New York in the AL standings.

August 28, 2008

Cristian Guzman became the second player in the Nationals short four year history and the seventh player in Washington baseball history to hit for the cycle. In the bottom of the eighth inning of the game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Washington Nationals, Guzman completed the cycle when hit a line drive past Manny Ramirez in left-field, for a triple. The Nats go on to beat the Dodgers 11-2 to comlete the three game sweep.
