The Nationals and Live Nation confirmed yesterday that the artists performing at the first concert at Nationals Park will indeed be legends Billy Joel and Elton John, who will tour the country this summer on their Face 2 Face tour.
Their stop in Washington is set for July 11.
Tickets go on sale this Saturday, February 28, at 10 a.m. at www.tickets.com or by calling 1-888-632-6287. Tickets cost $56.50, $102, and $182.
The concert will blend a series of duets at twin pianos and solo sets for each performer with his own band, building to a grand finale with both performers and their bands.
“I love touring with Billy," John said in a statement released by the Nationals and Live Nation. "I have the greatest respect for him and we’re such good friends."
“The great thing about performing with Elton is that he is such a good piano player and that makes me have to dig deep to keep up with him, not to mention I’ve got the best seat in the house-only one piano away from Elton John!” said Joel.
“The Nationals are thrilled to host the Face to Face Tour with Elton John and Billy Joel for the first ever concert at Nationals Park,” Nationals President Stan Kasten said in the same statement. “Elton and Billy are beloved throughout Washington, D.C., and have a rich history performing in our city. Undoubtedly, this will be an remarkable inaugural evening of music out under the stars, showcasing the ballpark’s capabilities as a premiere summer concert venue.”

The Nationals and Live Nation on Monday morning will announce the first concert at Nationals Park... reported by the Post's music writer to be Billy Joel and Elton John.
The two apparently already have joint appearances set for Wrigley Field and Citizens Bank Park, though it's not clear if that's the only criteria the Post used to suss-out the performers.
The concert is being billed by the ballclub as "Washington, D.C.’s biggest summer concert."
D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty will be on hand for the 10:30 a.m. announcement.
Personally, I've got my fingers crossed for U2, but that's nothing but wishful speculation on my part.
UPDATE: It is confirmed - Billy Joel and Elton John will play Nationals Park on July 11. Details to come this afternoon. (2/23/08 12:05 p.m.)
